Stevie Wonder’s “I Wish” isn’t a Christmas song, but the opening verse of that musical tribute to childhood reminds us of the true spirit of the season. Stevie sings:

Lookin’ back on when I was a little, nappy-headed boy

When my only worry was for Christmas what would be my toy

Even though we sometimes would not get a thing

We were happy with the joy the day would bring!

Simple, comforting words for troubled times.

Unemployment remains high – over 9% nationally. Despite their best efforts many Americans simply cannot find work – and a lot of people who have jobs are nonetheless struggling to make ends meet. In addition to that, some people comfortable circumstances are showing an increased impatience and lack of compassion toward those who are struggling. Republicans in Congress repeatedly opposed extending unemployment benefits because, like Ebenezer Scrooge, they disdainfully dismiss the poor and jobless as “idle.” Of course, those same Republicans demanded that millionaires get an income tax reduction, even though it will add $700 billion to the federal deficit.

So, for countless families life continues to be a struggle. Money’s funny, change is strange and a lot of parents are feeling guilty because they can’t provide the presents their kids want for Christmas. But there is no greater gift than the blessing of love, family and friendship and that’s what Stevie Wonder was singing about.

The Grinch learned that lesson from the folks he tried to harm. Dr. Seuss’ green-furred villain stole everything out of Who-ville. All the presents, all the decorations, all the food. And yet, when the sun came up on Christmas Day, all the Whos down in Who-ville, the tall and the small, went outside, joined hands and lifted their voices in a song of joy and gratitude. A touching line in that song proclaims: “Christmas Day is in our grasp so long as we have hands to clasp.” Holding hands, drawing close to one another, sharing love and friendship, offering encouragement, comforting and consoling one another… this is what makes Christmas meaningful.

Dr. Seuss and Stevie Wonder both built on the Biblical message of love, joy and hope that is the heart of Christmas. As one of our most time-honored Christmas carols says:

God rest ye merry gentlemen. Let nothing you dismay

Remember, Christ our savior was born on Christmas Day

To save us all from Satan’s power, when we were gone astray

Oh, tidings of comfort and joy!

This song empowers us to be brave and confident in the face of adversity. “Let nothing you dismay” because no matter what the world throws at us, we can handle it, we can get through and triumph in difficult days because God, the creator of the universe, loves us and is always close by, ready to strengthen us with comfort and joy even in the worst of times!

The writer Earl Hamner, Jr. captured that spirit in The Homecoming, the classic TV movie that inspired the long-running series The Waltons. The epilogue to that Depression-era drama is beautiful: “Christmas is a season when we give tokens of love. In that house we gave not tokens but love itself.”

SARAH PALIN'S INSULTING BLACK HISTORY "LESSON"

African-Americans do not need Sarah Palin to lecture us about black history. In her new book, America By Heart: Reflections on Family, Faith, and Flag, Palin -- who soared to prominence by demonizing President Obama, mischaracterizing civil rights leaders and glorifying small-town white America -- expresses admiration for two of our most revered African-American heroes: civil rights champion Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Booker T. Washington, the former slave who was the preeminent voice for black education in the 19^th and early 20^th century. But Palin’s respect for these icons reflects an offensive misrepresentation of the black freedom struggle that is painfully common among white conservatives.

Palin praises Washington for working menial jobs and for developing Tuskegee Institute as if he was some kind of anomaly; as if hard work, self-help and making a way out of no way was not the mainstream avocation of black folks. Palin pontificates: “Washington had every incentive to…give the finger to The Man. Instead, he worked to pass on to others in need the virtues that had given him success… He didn’t take the easy path; he took the hard path. He earned his success and his self-esteem.”

The patronizing ignorance of those words is staggering. There was no “easy path” for Booker T. Washington to choose in the post-slavery era (just as there has been no easy path for countless African-Americans since that time). And there was nothing unique about Washington’s diligence and commitment to empowering those who came after him. Black folk before, during and after Booker T’s time have always been defined by diligence, self-reliance and a commitment to excellence. Our demands for social justice, equal opportunity and political remedies to institutionalized racism and economic under-development have always been reinforced by hard work. Booker T. Washington earned his success and self-esteem? Absolutely! But so have generations of Black Americans who Sarah Palin apparently cares nothing about.

Palin is similarly clueless when she misapplies Dr. King’s “I Have A Dream” speech in a clumsy attempt to discredit President Barack Obama. In trashing Mr. Obama’s call for “fundamental transformation” in our society, Palin writes: “Dr. King called not for a rejection of America's founding principles, but for America to ‘rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed.’”

See, this is what happens when you try to put words into folk’s mouths, while ignoring the words that have actually been spoken. President Obama has never called for “a rejection of America’s founding principles.” When he spoke of the need for a “fundamental transformation” in our country, Mr. Obama was talking about the need for greater social and economic fairness that would expand the opportunities for average, work-a-day Americans to improve their lives (through access to education, jobs, health care, home ownership, etc.) This is the same message Dr. King delivered throughout his life. Indeed, the demand for economic justice was a basic component of the Civil Rights struggle. The March on Washington was officially billed as a rally for “Jobs and Freedom” and, during “I Have A Dream,” Dr. King decried that a century after emancipation “…the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity.”

I doubt seriously that Sarah Palin has never listened to or read “Where Do We Go From Here,” the speech in which Dr. King questioned the ruthlessness of capitalism and called for “restructuring the whole of American society.” King concludes that address with this bold pronouncement:

“…communism forgets that life is individual. Capitalism forgets that life is social, and the kingdom of brotherhood is found neither in the thesis of communism nor the antithesis of capitalism but in a higher synthesis…that combines the truth of both. Now, when I say question the whole society, it means ultimately coming to see that the problem of racism, the problem of economic exploitation, and the problem of war are all tied together. These are the triple evils that are interrelated.”

Sarah Palin would like to pretend that Dr. King never said things like that. But he did. All the time. And his words are just as true today as they were four decades ago. Something else Dr. King used to say seems fitting here: “No lie can live forever.”

Attempts by Sarah Palin and other conservatives to revise history by distorting the words and deeds of black heroes like Martin Luther King, Jr. and Booker T. Washington are profoundly insulting. They’re also easily debunked which makes them laughable.

WHAT MANDATE? REPUBLICANS IGNORE POLL NUMBERS!

Mitch McConnell and John Boeher are either lying or they simply do not understand the facts. Either way, the Republican leaders of the House and Senate are wrong when they claim that the American people are clamoring for a reduction in federal spending and repeal of the healthcare reform act. Nationwide exit polls conducted on Election Day, November 2^nd, reveal that voters are divided evenly on these and other important issues.

During his line-in-the-sand speech to the Heritage Foundation last week, Senate Minority Leader McConnell, emboldened by the GOP’s historic election wins, declared that repealing the Healthcare Reform Act would be Senate Republicans’ number one legislative goal. Ironically, exit polls show that only 18% of Americans believe that healthcare is the most important issue facing our nation. (For the overwhelming majority of us, 62%, the economy is the most urgent matter.) And, in contrast to Republican claims, there is no tidal wave of voter outrage against the healthcare law. 48% of voters want the healthcare reform act repealed, but an almost equal number, 47%, say healthcare reform should be either left alone or expanded. So, at best Americans are divided – practically in half – over what to do with the new healthcare law.

The stats are similar on the subject of spending. 39% of exit poll respondents said that reducing the deficit should be the top priority of the new Congress. But 37% (again, an almost equal number) said that Congress’ top priority ought to be spending money to create jobs.

Those numbers are pretty much the same in Sen. McConnell’s home state of Kentucky. Voters there actually favor government spending over deficit reduction by a slim margin. 37% of Kentuckians say Washington should spend money to put people back to work. A slightly smaller number, 35% say the government should stop spending and concentrate on bringing down the deficit.

The Republicans are also wrong when they claim that voters strongly oppose stimulus spending. The American people are actually split into thirds on this issue. Exit polls show that 33% of us feel that the federal stimulus package hurt the economy. But 32% say it helped and another 32% say it had no effect.

What about the issue of taxes? Republicans rebuffed President Obama’s plan to preserve President Bush’s tax cuts for the middle class, while allowing income taxes for the wealthy to go back up to pre-Bush levels. The GOP insists that tax cuts should be kept in place for all Americans, even the rich; 39% of the American people agree with that. But 37% agree with President Obama that only people who earn less than $250,000 a year should have their taxes reduced.

The poll numbers paint a strikingly different picture of voters’ attitudes and priorities than Republican leaders claim. So, despite all of their gloating, posturing and pontificating in the wake of last week’s midterm elections, the Republicans simply do not have the mandates that they claim. Sen. McConnell, Rep. Boehner and their cohorts are dead wrong when they assert that a vast majority of Americans are demanding that government reduce spending, cut taxes and repealing healthcare reform. That’s the Republican Party agenda, not the agenda of most Americans.

So, President Obama and the Democrats on Capitol Hill should feel no obligation to knuckle under and go along with the Republican program. On the contrary, they should stand firm on their convictions with the confidence that they are standing up for a large and significant segment of the American voting populace.

BLAME OBAMA FOR ENTHUSIASM GAP

Watching President Obama, former President Clinton and other Democratic Party leaders canvass the country in a desperate bid to fire up the party faithful on the eve of the midterm elections filled me a strange feeling both pride and deep disappointment. It should never have come to this. There should never have been an “enthusiasm gap” among Democratic voters. And this gap would probably have never opened up if President Obama had been more courageous during his first year and a half in office.

A few weeks ago, President Obama scolded deflated Democrats in a “Rolling Stone” cover story where he declared: "The idea that we've got a lack of enthusiasm in the Democratic base, that people are sitting on their hands complaining, is just irresponsible." While he was philosophically correct, Mr. Obama failed to recognize that this “irresponsible” lack of zeal among some Democrats was largely his fault.

President Obama has been catching flak from liberals and progressives for well over a year now because of his perceived failure to advocate for basic, Democratic Party policies and principles. The President caved on key points in the healthcare bill (the end of life provision and the public option) without a fight, he kowtowed to the beat cop who humiliated and wrongfully arrested black Harvard professor Dr. Henry Louis Gates at his own house, he did not push for a Senate vote on his middle class tax cut plan (which Republicans opposed), he threw Shirley Sherrod under the bus then tried to play it off, he paid lip service to ending the military’s discriminatory Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy then sat quietly by while the Justice Department appealed the court ruling that found the policy unconstitutional…

Obama’s apparent timidity dispirited the liberal/progressive base of the Democratic Party and diluted excitement over White House successes such as: policies that saved thousands of public service jobs (teachers, cops, etc.), the extension of unemployment benefits, Wall Street reform, increased college financial aid, tax cuts for small businesses and (despite its flaws) passage of healthcare reform. And don’t forget that President Obama forced British Petroleum to set up a $20 billion fund for Americans affected by the catastrophic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

If the Democratic Party is to have any measure of success in Congress over the next two years, and if Mr. Obama is to have any hope of re-election, then the President must adopt a radically different leadership style. With the balance of power poised to shift on Capitol Hill, President Obama needs to finally accept the fact that he is engaged political warfare. His honorable predisposition toward compromise and consensus has not worked and will not work because the Republicans are unabashedly committed to opposing, obstructing and undermining everything President Obama tries to accomplish. So, instead of acting like an arbitrator, Mr. Obama needs to become a fighter. That means pushing back rhetorically against the outlandish falsehoods and flat-out lies hurled by conservative rabble rousers. It will mean taking his case directly to the American people, telling them why his policies are beneficial. Most important of all, President Obama must stand firmly, courageously and consistently, for the policies and philosophy in which he believes.

BISHOP EDDIE LONG: MILLSTONE JUSTICE

I don’t know if Bishop Eddie Long is guilty of the despicable sexual abuse allegations aimed athim in separate lawsuits by four young men. But the kind of manipulative, predatory behavior of which Bishop Long has been accused is tragically common in our society – even within some of our churches. However, any so-called Christians (especially clergy and church leaders) who would be arrogant and twisted enough to commit such a crime should take heed that Jesus Christ promised a particularly horrible hell for those who prey on children and the childlike.

Of all of the evil acts that human beings commit, sex crimes are among the most heinous because they inflict deep, often irreparable wounds to the mind and spirit. Sexual victimization can scorch one’s sense of trust and self-worth so horribly that fear, anger, cynicism and self-loathing take root in the places where confidence, joy, a sense of safety and a love of life were meant to blossom. These impacts are devastating at any age, but they are especially traumatic for young abuse victims. I believe this is one of the reasons that Jesus declares in the book of Matthew (chapter 18, verses 5 – 7): “And whoever welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me. But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.” So important is this warning that it is repeated in the gospels of Mark (chapter 9, verse 42) and Luke (chapter 7, verse 2).)

When Jesus used the terms “child” and “little ones” in this context I don’t believe he was speaking solely of persons who are chronologically young; he was referring also to those who are young in their spiritual, emotional and mental development. The men who have accused Bishop Long were emotionally young when, out of the unique loneliness felt by fatherless black teens, they connected with Long as a caring paternal figure. The accusers say that it was for fear of losing this fatherly connection that they submitted to sex acts with the bishop. The judicial process will reveal whether these allegations are factual.

Jesus had extraordinary compassion and respect for children. Throughout the gospels he points to the inherent optimism and faith of kids as a model for adults and he promises rewards to those who treat children with kindness. But Jesus is also uncompromising when it comes to unrepentant child abusers. Sexual predators conceal their crimes behind the shame of their victims and the stubborn skepticism of good people who are quick to dismiss the claims of the victims. But Jesus reminds us in three of the four gospels that there is no hiding place for predators.

The quote by Scottish essayist Thomas Carlyle that was so frequently referenced Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. remains true: “No lie can live forever!” The truth will come out -- if not in this lifetime, then certainly in the afterlife where God’s justice is swift, harsh and eternal.

HEISMAN DIS-TRUST

I was never a great athlete. I played Pop Warner as a kid and was on the football team throughout my four years at John Muir High School in Pasadena, California but I never developed the passion or skills to become anything remotely resembling a star player. But running around on all those football fields helped me learn a lot about character: diligence, teamwork, the ability to push past perceived limitations and the finality of competition. That’s why I’m convinced that forcing Reggie Bush to relinquish his Heisman Trophy was a travesty that undermines the essence and the value of sports.

Sports captivate us because they allow us to witness and participate in true competition – contests where the outcome does not hinge on one’s racial or ethnic background, socio-economic status, political or social connections, off-the-field associations, etc. In sports, the bottom line is performance. So, we are thrilled and inspired by the purity and magnificence of similarly skilled and comparably equipped opponents battling it out according to established rules of play.

Reggie Bush broke the rules, but he did not dishonor the game. Accepting gifts or money from sports agents, university alumni, coaches, etc. violates the NCAA code -- but those standards have nothing to do with how an athlete plays. Bush earned the Heisman Trophy through superior execution on the football field. He proved his mettle in the heat of competition, which is what sports are all about. Reggie Bush’s achievements at USC cannot be undone, so all of his awards and history should be honored.

By taking away his Heisman Trophy and erasing his achievements from the record books, the NCAA is not only over-punishing Bush, it is taking a sledge hammer to the concept of greatness achieved through competition which is the basic pillar of sports itself. Returning Bush’s award to the Heisman Trust actually devalues the trophy by sending out a signal that excellence is less important than controversial rules capriciously enforced.

On top of that, Reggie Bush’s unprecedented punishment will do nothing to prevent future violations of the NCAA’s questionable rules. This could actually lead to greater cynicism among young athletes who already regard college sports as an exploitive plantation system. The result could be more, not fewer, athletes taking whatever perks they can get from the officials and business people who will certainly continue to woo talented kids with lavish handouts.

No high principles were affirmed or protected by stripping Reggie Bush of college football’s highest honor. On the contrary, the noble ideas of competition which lie at the heart of sports may have been damaged more deeply than the NCAA or the Heisman Trust realize.

TURNER’S TWO CENTS: GLENN BECK’S PHONY REGRET

So, now Glenn Beck wants us to believe that he’s sorry for calling President Obama a racist. Sounds like another attempted con job as Beck tries to dupe the nation by cloaking his divisive message behind a toned down image.

Beck has repeatedly rationalized his ridiculous assertion that that Mr. Obama “has a deep-seated hatred of white people or white culture.” But last Sunday, one day after his “Restoring Honor” rally on the Washington mall, Beck told fellow Fox News host Chris Wallace that he was wrong to use the R-word. Of course, the muck-raking conservative broadcaster didn’t actually apologize – he’s too self-righteous, agenda-driven and, I believe, too insincere for that. Beck claimed that he simply chose his words poorly. The exchange between Beck and Wallace on “Fox News Sunday” went down thusly:

WALLACE: "Do you regret having called [Obama] a racist and saying he had a deep seated hatred for white people?"

BECK: "Of course I do. I don't want to retract the, um...I want to amend that I think it is much more of a theological question, that he is a guy who understands the world through liberation theology, which is oppressor-and-victim. 'Racist,' first of all, it shouldn't have been said. It was poorly said. I have a big fat mouth sometimes and I say things. That's just not the way people should behave. And it was not accurate. It is liberation theology that has shaped his world view."

That whack excuse doesn’t even begin to sound honest. Does Beck actually expect us to believe that he intended to say “liberation theology” but his tongue slipped and accidentally blurted out the words “racist” and “deep-seated hatred for white people?” Please.

Glenn Beck is may be a rabble rouser who manipulates the facts and appeals to people’s fears and suspicions but he is neither stupid nor inarticulate. He’s an experienced broadcaster (he got his first radio shows at 13) who always appears well-rehearsed. So, when Beck accused President Obama of hating white people, he meant exactly that. He was being deliberately inflammatory in yet another effort to stir up the wrath of frightened white conservatives.

But Beck’s non-retraction of his Obama-hates-white-folks remark ties in with the show he put on during his “Restoring Honor” rally last Saturday. In a rambling, superficial speech that alternately invoked the Founding Fathers and God, Beck dropped his divisive, fear-stoking rhetoric and his angry, condescending persona so that he could play the role of a loving spiritual leader who doesn’t care about politics and wants to unite Americans in a spirit of brotherhood. He even told his followers to leave their belligerent, paranoid tea party banners and protest signs at home (although, they apparently got a pass on the “Don’t Tread On Me” flags). But no amount of window dressing could conceal the fact that Glenn Beck and his followers are still the same ol’ infuriated, fact-twisting, liberal-bashing, Obama-hating, violence-condoning crowd that they’ve always been. The “Restoring America” title and the claims by Beck, Sarah Palin and other speakers that our nation is at some kind of life-and-death crossroads reflects the cornerstone fear of the tea party movement: that the United States is hurtling out of control toward a cultural, political, economic and national security abyss because of the left-wing policies of President Obama and the Democrats in Congress. Same garbage, different package.

Glenn Beck referred to Abraham Lincoln’s “Gettysburg Address” several times during his speech at the “Restoring Honor” rally. But as I listened, another famous Lincoln quote kept running through my mind: “You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time.”

With his image-softening appearances on the Washington DC mall and on Chris Wallace’s show, Glenn Beck is apparently trying to convince us that he is a reasonable guy without a political agenda. I suspect that very few of the people will be fooled into believing that.

Black Governor Acting Like "Raisin in the Sun" Racist

By asking the peace-loving Americans who want to build an Islamic cultural center nearGround Zero to move their project to another site, New York Gov. David Paterson is acting like Karl Lindner, the faux-friendly racist who offers a black family cash to stay out of a white neighborhood in Lorraine Hansberry’s classic American play “A Raisin in the Sun.”With a deceptive smile on his lips, Lindner claims that the key to avoiding racial conflict is for black people to confine themselves to black areas of town. An equally disgusting, blame-the-victim attitude lies at the heart of efforts to relocate the Muslim center and mosque under development in Lower Manhattan. It would be disgraceful for any U.S. governor to accommodate such attitudes, but the fact that Paterson is African-American – and therefore inherits the memory, if not the experience, of centuries of racial oppression -- makes his action worse than shameful. It is inexcusable.

Like the villain in Hansberry’s play, Gov. Paterson cloaks his cruel, separate-but-equal pitch in high-sounding rhetoric about people sitting down to resolve their differences in an atmosphere of calm understanding. At a news conference on August 20, Paterson declared that he wanted to “promote some kind of ethnic and cultural understanding” by setting up “a dialogue with myself and others who might have some ideas on how to bring about a solution that’s favorable to everyone.” The governor amplified that view four days later, before discussing the mosque controversy with New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan. "We're not telling anyone what to do with their rights," the governor explained to reporters. “We're making an appeal.”

Unfortunately, Paterson is making the wrong appeal to the wrong people. The governor’s plan “promote ethnic and cultural understanding” doesn’t involve correcting the fact-twisting critics who wrongly blame the religion of Islam for the September 11 terrorist attacks. Neither isPaterson putting in check the McCarthyesque conspiracy crazies who claim that American Muslims are building mosques in a plot to undermine American culture and supplant the U.S. Constitution with Islamic religious law. (That’s an ironic claim since conservative Christians have been working since the Reagan era to impose their fundamentalist Biblical morality onto our nation’s laws and public institutions). Apparently, David Paterson believes that the best way to achieve “ethnic and cultural understanding” is to urge a group of Americans who have done nothing wrong to set their Constitutionally-guaranteed freedom aside in order to appease a pack of self-righteous, paranoid bullies who misunderstand and despise their religion.

Eboo Patel of the Interfaith Youth Core was correct when he told CNN that telling Muslims that they shouldn’t practice faith near Ground Zero is “like telling black people 50 years ago, you can sit anywhere on the bus you like, but just not the front.” That is a perfect analogy which Gov. David Paterson should recognize. Considering our history of struggle against racist exclusion and domination, African-Americans should identify with other minorities who are mistreated because of race, ethnicity or religion. Blacks should never side with bigots who seek to trample the rights of others. But that is precisely – and tragically -- what David Paterson has done.

At the end of “A Raisin in the Sun,” the Younger family rejects Lindner’s offer to buy back their house even though they’ve hit rock bottom financially and emotionally. Summoning pride in the midst of pain, the wise and proud matriarch, Lena Younger, declares: “I come from five generations of people who was slaves and sharecroppers – but ain’t nobody in my family never took no money that was a way of telling us we wasn’t fit to walk the earth!”

That is how the planners of the Islamic cultural center should respond to Gov. Paterson and to everyone else pressuring them to accept second-class citizenship.

Confederate Flags Glare at Oil Spill Clean-Up Crews

Racists in Grand Isle, Louisiana resent black and brown B.P. contractors...but love their money! Crime is down in Grand Isle, Louisiana, but residents of that small, predominately white fishing town still feel threatened. The presence of nearly 1,000 Gulf oil spill cleanup workers – many of them black and Latino – has so unnerved and angered townsfolk that some of them have taken to flying Confederate flags as a warning to the outsiders who are now sharing their town. But those outsiders are pumping big bucks into the hard-hit local economy and that underscores the hypocrisy of some Grand Isle residents.

Apparently, some of the workers contracted by BP to clean up the oily mess around Grand Isle have been behaving badly in town. Partying late into the night, bumping loud music on their car stereos, urinating in public… There have been reports of drunken men stumbling into people’s yards at night to pass out on lawns, bang on doors or splash in kiddie pools. Somebody said they saw an AK-47 in a cleanup worker’s truck. (Maybe the contractor was a 2nd Amendment advocate on his way to cheer for Sarah Palin speak at a tea party rally?)

One can see how residents would be annoyed, but none of the reported nuisances amounts to a major crime. In fact, crime has gone down since the BP contractors arrived. But the line between fact and perception is blurry in Grand Isle. Local police made 22 arrests last month, that’s seven fewer than in July of 2009. Still, a lot of people in Grand Isle seem to feel that they’re in danger – and they seem to view that danger in decidedly racial terms. That’s why they brought out their Confederate flags.

With the Dixie banner fluttering from her front balcony, 48-year-old Theresa Brunies told Los Angeles Times reporter Louis Sahagun, “I’d hate for Grand Isle to become known as a racist community. But these flags are just our way of telling strangers to keep out.” Now why would anyone think that’s racist? Feel free to roll your eyes now if you haven’t done so already.

The real message in Grand Isle is: keep out, but keep giving us your money. Local businesses, which faced potential ruin after the BP oil spill, are now turning large profits thanks to the cleanup crews. With sport fishermen and vacationers staying away from Grand Isle in droves, motels and fishing camps are charging BP inflated rates to house its contract workers. Rates have climbed as high as $100 per person per night and some renters claim to be raking in $30,000 a month.

Theresa Brunies, the Dixie flag waver who wants to keep strangers out, is making mad loot off of those strangers. Her catering company sells 1,200 box lunches to BP contractors every month and Brunies – apparently oblivious her own hypocrisy -- told the L.A. Times, “They pay very well. It’s definitely been a boost to my revenue.”

Racism is so pathetically predictable. Throughout our nation’s history, the haters in power have denied dignity, opportunity and equality to people of color but they’ve always been quick to thrust out an upturned palm whenever they thought they could make a buck off of our efforts.

Those white folks in Grand Isle who are so scared and angry need to ask themselves how they’d manage if BP sent its contractors – and all those big checks – somewhere else. Instead of unfurling that symbol of racist intimidation which is the Confederate flag, the Grand Islanders ought to roll out the welcome mat.

WATERS' ACCUSERS HAVE BEEN WRONG BEFORE

The flimsy case against Maxine Waters just got flimsier. Revelations about the poor judgment and dishonesty of Waters’ accusers reinforces the impression that the ethics investigation of the esteemed South Central L.A. Congresswoman is nothing more than a witch hunt.

The Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE), the independent panel that accused Congresswoman Waters of misconduct, has a problem with facts. The OCE has no punitive power; it merely investigates and reports its findings to the House Committee on Standards of Official Conduct (call ‘em the House ethics committee, for short) which can then convene a trial. But, as banking columnist David Federer points out on The Huffington Post, the OCE has a record of screwing things up.

Last November, the OCE claimed that California Rep. Pete Stark improperly received a tax credit by claiming that a home he owns in Harwood, Maryland is his primary residence. But the house ethics committee cleared Stark of that charge and slammed the OCE for getting it wrong. The commitee’s report stated: “The evidence clearly establishes that Representative Stark did not receive a tax credit as a result of filing an application for the credit… Representative Stark did not seek out the Maryland property tax credit… Therefore, Representative Stark did not violate House ethics rules. Nor did he run afoul of Maryland's criminal or tax laws.”

But wait! There’s more!

Three months before the OCE issued its false report on Pete Stark, the panel accused Missouri Congressman Sam Graves of wrongdoing in a case that seems to mirror the Maxine Waters affair. The OCE alleged that Graves violated House ethics rules by inviting a representative from the Missouri Soybean Association to testify before the House Committee on Small Business. The Soybean guy, Brooks Hurst, held stock in two biofuel plants where Rep. Graves and his wife also had investments. According to the OCE, having Hurst testify to the small business committee gave the “appearance of a conflict of interest” for Graves. Not an actual conflict of interest, but simply the “appearance” of one. Once again, the House Committee on Standards of Official Conduct ruled that the OCE was wrong. The committee concluded that Rep. Graves and his wife did not benefit from having Hurst testify and that House ethics rules do not prohibit the “appearance of a conflict of interest.”

I predict a similar ruling in the Maxine Waters case. Neither she nor her husband got anything out of the meeting Waters arranged between Treasury Department officials and leaders of the National Bankers Association – even though Waters’ husband was a stockholder and former board member of OneUnited Bank, which was a focus of discussion in that meeting. Moreover, Rep. Waters’ setting up the sit-down between Treasury and the NBA was no more improper for than was Rep. Graves inviting the Soybean Association rep to testify.

Perhaps this is why the House ethics committee has declined to set a date for Maxine Waters’ trial or to even release the specific allegations against her. Perhaps, given the OCE’s questionable record, the House Committee on Standards of Official Conduct suspects that the Waters matter – like the Stark and Graves cases – is built on the crumbly foundation of falsehood, misinterpretation of facts and misapplication of the rules. In other words, the OCE may have made a mountain out of a molehill…again.

A DIM "VIEW" OF OBAMA'S WEAKNESS by Cameron Turner

President Obama reaffirmed his reluctance to push back against his enemies. No wonder his approval ratings are in the cellar.

August 2, 2010 -- After holding my breath for about a year, I have exhaled in discouraged resignation. Since the raucous healthcare battles of last summer – when belligerent conservatives spewed paranoid misinformation in town halls and on the air – I have clung to the steadily-crumbling hope that President Obama would stand up to his right wing attackers by vigorously defending his policies. But I abandoned that hope after watching the President on ABC’s “The View” last week. During a jokey (but not at all funny) exchange with co-host Joy Behar, Mr. Obama made it clear that he has no intention of ever putting his dukes up.

About nine minutes into the interview, Behar asked President Obama why he hasn’t done more to counter the conservative media pundits who continue to bash him despite achievements like healthcare reform, the newly-passed Wall Street regulations and appointing two women to the Supreme Court. (To Behar’s list I would add Obama’s push to extend unemployment benefits and his forcing BP to set up a $20 billion relief fund for Americans devastated by the Gulf Coast oil spill.)

“I could go on and on about your accomplishments, and yet the right wing, through Fox News and other outlets, they seem to be hijacking the narrative,” bemoaned Behar. “Where on your side is the narrative? Where is your attack dog to come out and tell the American people, ‘Listen, this is what we did!’” My fist pumped reflexively at that crucial and perfectly stated question. But my pride crashed with the President’s milquetoast response. First, he made a joke. Responding to Behar’s “where is your attack dog” query, Mr. Obama said, “Joy, that’s your job!” “I do it!” shouted the still-frustrated Behar as the audience erupted into applause and laughter.

My chin dropped as the President quieted the crowd and elaborated with a really lame answer. After conceding that “politics is a contact sport” Mr. Obama accused Republicans of not playing fair. “We shouldn’t be campaigning all the time,” the President said. “There’s a time to campaign and a there’s a time to govern. Over the last 20 months what we’ve tried to do is to govern.”

That sounds noble and, yes, the country is better off because President Obama hasn’t allowed the haters to distract him from the task of leading the government. But leading does not require you to sit by passively while your enemies mischaracterize your policies and call you everything but a child of God. Sadly, that is what President Obama has done for the most part. As a result, the public’s perception of Mr. Obama’s presidency has been shaped by Republican lawmakers, conservative TV and radio, the Tea Party movement and ambitious right wing activists like Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich. That’s what Joy Behar meant when she said conservatives were “hijacking the narrative.”

But this goes way beyond perception and PR. President Obama’s reluctance to make contact in the rough-and-tumble contact sport of Washington, DC politics has unsettling practical implications. It’s the reason that Shirley Sherrod got fired. It’s hard to believe that Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack booted Sherrod without an OK from the Oval Office. But, even if President Obama didn’t personally approve the firing, his lack of toughness set the tone for it. When word hit that Fox News muckraker Glenn Beck was going to discuss a video excerpt (now-discredited) of Sherrod supposedly talking bad about white folks, the Obama Administration got so scared (as did the NAACP) that Sherrod was forced to resign with the quickness.

Nobody, from President Obama on down, ever stopped to say, “Wait a minute! This video is only part of a longer speech and it was posted on an Obama-hating web sit. Now it’s being picked up by Obama-hating TV. Hmmm. Maybe the President’s foes are working an agenda here? Maybe we should take a look at the entire video before we throw one of our own under the bus?” A courageous leader would have done that. But the Sherrod affair was consistent with President Obama’s pattern of not being courageous. From caving in on key provisions of his healthcare proposal, to obsequiously apologizing (over and over again) to the police sergeant who wrongfully arrested Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates, President Obama has a history of spinelessness which has emboldened his opponents and demoralized his supporters.

A weak-kneed leader can’t inspire anyone – not even people who like what the leader stands for. The consequence of President Obama’s timidity is that, despite backing initiatives which have been popular and beneficial to the American people, Mr. Obama’s approval ratings are in the cellar, he is losing to generic Republican candidates in hypothetical election polls and his party is in real danger of being voted out of power on Capitol Hill.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, one of many Democrats in the throes of a tough re-election bid, expressed his frustration with President Obama when he told a Las Vegas television station, “He is a person who doesn't like confrontation. He's a peacemaker. And sometimes I think you have to be a little more forceful. And sometimes I don't think he is.” Washington Post columnist Eugene Robinson was less charitable when he admonished the President that “the way to deal with bullies is to confront them, not run away.”

Watching President Obama kowtow to bullies brings to mind a stinging line from Gore Vidal’s classic play and movie about Presidential politics, “The Best Man.” In a pivotal scene, the Truman-esque former President slams a good-hearted but non-aggressive candidate saying, “Power is not a toy that we give to nice children. It’s a weapon! And the strong man takes it and uses it.” That Machiavellian statement espouses a political reality that President Obama must embrace if he hopes to pull his presidency and his party back from the brink. He doesn’t have to play dirty, but he does have to play. Mr. Obama correctly told “The View” that politics is a contact sport. It’s long past time for him to button up his helmet and start hitting.

Black Folks, The Flag and the Fourth of July

7/04/10 -- The American Flag is a complicated and painful symbol to African-Americans. Some of our people say that it’s naïve or insulting to display or Stars and Stripes considering the long history of racial oppression – much of it government-sponsored – which our people have endured throughout our nation’s history. But I have two reasons for hoisting Old Glory and, as we gather to celebrate Independence Day, I’d like to share those reasons with you.

1) THE AMERICAN FLAG BELONGS TO “US” – Racists perpetuate the lie that white men are solely responsible for the greatness of the United States. (In doing so, these white supremacist fools seek to deny American status to so-called “minorities.”) But this country has always been racially and ethnically diverse and the countless contributions of people of color have made America what it is, has been and what it will be. Our blood, our sweat, our tears, our intellect, our ingenuity, our creativity and our spirituality have been integral to the American social, cultural, political and economic fabric since the nation’s colonial infancy.

The United States belongs to all of us. We built it. We paid for it. We died for it. It is ours. The Americanism of black folks and other people of color is an irrefutable fact.

2) THE AMERICAN FLAG REPRESENTS THE AMERICAN CONCEPT – The Stars and Stripes symbolize the high ideals laid out in the Declaration of Independence U.S. Constitution, the two noble documents which gave us the philosophical and legal ammunition to wage our fight for freedom here in the so-called “Land of the Free.” The righteous battles for civil rights were fought through marches, sit-ins-, boycotts and all manner of protests. But, ultimately, our victories over legalized segregation and discrimination were won in the federal courts where heroes like NAACP lawyer Thurgood Marshall who used Constitutional arguments to force this nation to overturn one racist law after another.

How tragic and shameful it is that so many Americans have been marginalized and brutalized because other Americans – blinded by bigotry, arrogance and fear – have refused to embrace the ideals of “liberty and justice for all.” Yet, our nation has come a mighty long way and today we enjoy freedom and opportunities which our forebears could scarcely have imagined.

America is a concept which demands freedom and equality for all Americans. That’s an idea worth celebrating and that is why I’m proud to fly the flag on the Fourth of July.

With those few, noncombative but illuminating words, LL Cool J put Sarah Palin and Fox News Channel in check -- exposing their lame effort to present Palin as someone who’s down with black folks, instead of who she really is: the deliberately divisive, rabble-rousing spokesperson for America’s angry white conservatives.

Virginia Congressman Eric Cantor (the House Minority Whip) lied when he stood up at a news conference and claimed, "A bullet was s shot through the window of my campaign office."
Republican attempts to play the victim, blame the messenger and downplay the seriousness of the criminal, un-American acts of terror aimed at Democrats cannot hide the fact that GOP leaders have permitted and even encouraged the rage of right wing extremists.

The lights had barely dimmed on the 82nd Academy Awards when shock jock Howard Stern opened his mouth with an ignorant assessment of Gabourey Sidibe, the Oscar-nominated star of “Precious.” Stern said: "Everyone's pretending she's a part of show business and she's never going to be in another movie.”

Well, obviously, Howard Stern didn't know what the heck he was talking about when he said that Oscar-nominated "Precious" star Gabourey Sidibe is "never going to be in another movie." Sidibe completed two projects before the Oscars and the African-American film community is going to make sure that she (and a lot of other talented artists) continue to get opportunities to display their talents...

Obama Is Wrong About Afghanistan

Putting more American boots on the ground will not

reduce the threat of terrorist attacks.

12-01-09 -- President Obama is making a huge mistake if he thinks that sending 35,000 more U.S. troops to Afghanistan will make our country safer from the threat of terrorism. Battling terrorism is our goal, is it not? Isn’t that why we attacked Afghanistan after the September 11, 2001 terror attacks? Isn't that why we’re fighting to keep the Taliban from regaining power in Afgahnistan and why we’re propping up the corruption-riddled regime of Afghan President Hamid Karzai? But the evidence of the last eight years is that more boots on the ground will do nothing to keep terrorists at bay.

The President’s plan deploys about 25% fewer troops than the military requested and it outlines a framework for eventual withdrawal, but Mr. Obama’s strategy is based on the same flawed logic relied on by President Bush -- namely that large numbers of ground troops can somehow stop terrorists from plotting attacks against the United States. This has not worked in the eight years since the U.S. first invaded Afghanistan and Iraq.

The al Qaeda terrorists are not restricted by geography, so it is naïve for us to talk about defeating them in Afghanistan or denying them a safe haven there. Experts warn that even if American forces managed to secure Afghanistan, anti-U.S. terrorists could easily take up headquarters in nations like Yemen, Somalia or in Afghanistan’s next door neighbor, Pakistan (where al Qaeda has apparently been operating for years).

More sobering is the fact that, since the U.S-led invasion in 2001, al Qaeda has mutated from an organization into a deadly political philosophy embraced by anti-Western militants around the world. Some of the terrible results:

-- Terrorists with no direct link to al Qaeda bombed commuter trains in Madrid, Spain in 2004, killing 191 people.
A year later, four British nationals exploded suicide bombs in the London underground and on a double-decker bus. A second series of bombings in the underground was thwarted two weeks later.
-- In 2006, British officials foiled a plot by al Qaeda sympathizers to murder thousands by smuggling liquid explosives onto 10 planes flying out of London’s Heathrow airport.

These tragedies occurred in spite of the massive American military presence in Afghanistan and Iraq. U.S. troop deployments have had no preventive effect on terrorist plots hatched inside the United States, either:

-- In 2007, the FBI nabbed six Muslim extremists who were scheming to use automatic weapons, grenade launchers and explosives to murder American soldiers at Fort Dix, New Jersey. The would-be terrorists were legal U.S. residents of Macedonian, Jordanian, Palestinian and Turkish descent who had lived most of their lives here.

-- In May of this year, three American citizens and one Haitian immigrant were arrested in New York for allegedly plotting to bomb two synagogues and shoot down Air National Guard planes with anti-aircraft weapons. Federal authorities say the suspected ring leader, James Cromitie, told an FBI informant that he was connected a jihadist group in Pakistan called to Jaish-e-Muhammad.
-- Denver airport shuttle driver Najibullah Zazi, a legal Afghan immigrant who’s lived in our country for 10 years, was indicted in September for allegedly conspiring with at least three other men to bomb unspecified U.S. targets.
-- And, of course, the Fort Hood killer, Nidal Hasan, is a major in the United States Army.

Obviously, having American soldiers in Afghanistan has not made our nation safe from the threat terrorism. So, sending tens of thousands more brave American men and women to kill and die on Afghan soil is pointless. Our best defense against terrorism is to expand the intelligence gathering and law enforcement efforts which discovered the evil plans listed above. President Obama should freeze further deployments and begin the process of pulling our people out of there.
