THE BEST OF "TURNER'S TWO CENTS"

Lena Horne's Unconquerable "Belief" (EURweb.com, 5/20/10)

Her cameo in the 1978 movie adaptation of the Broadway smash “The Wiz” wasn’t Lena Horne’s most famous screen role but it was certainly one of her most significant. As Glinda the Good Witch of the South, Miss Horne rendered the energizing anthem “If You Believe,” a song that reflects the pride and tenacity that propelled Miss Horne through a multi-decade career fraught with racial injustice.

Applauding Alpha Phi Alpha's Arizona Snub (EURweb.com, 5/4/10)

In the short term, Arizona's new immigration law will be used to target working class Latinos. But it won’t take long before all Latinos, and then Asians and African-Americans could get caught up.

Confederate Flap Reveals Republicans' True Colors (EURweb.com, 4/30/10)

The Republican Party pays lip service to racial inclusion, but when it comes to policy the GOP always puts the wishes of white folks — including white racists — first. Make no mistake about it, Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell’s call for Confederate History Month was an attempt to redefine history to help angry white racists and neo-states’ rights advocates feel empowered. But the only way to do that is to lie.

VIDEO BLOG: LL Cool J Checks Sarah Palin (UrbanBeautyCollective.com, 4/2/10)

When he heard that he had been included in Sarah Palin’s interview special “Real American Stories,” LL Cool J fired off a tweet saying: “Fox News lifted an old interview I gave in 2008 to someone else & are misrepresenting to the public in order to promote Sarah Palin’s Show. WOW." With those few, noncombative but illuminating words, LL Cool J put Sarah Palin and Fox News Channel in check -- exposing their lame effort to present Palin as someone who’s down with black folks, instead of who she really is: the deliberately divisive, rabble-rousing spokesperson for America’s angry white conservatives.

Violent Republicans (EURweb.com, 3/30/10)

Virginia Congressman Eric Cantor (the House Minority Whip) lied when he stood up at a news conference and claimed, "A bullet was s shot through the window of my campaign office."
Republican attempts to play the victim, blame the messenger and downplay the seriousness of the criminal, un-American acts of terror aimed at Democrats cannot hide the fact that GOP leaders have permitted and even encouraged the rage of right wing extremists.

VIDEO BLOG: Sidibe's Success Exposes Howard Stern's Silliness (UrbanThoughtCollective.com, 3/12/10)

The lights had barely dimmed on the 82nd Academy Awards when shock jock Howard Stern opened his mouth with an ignorant assessment of Gabourey Sidibe, the Oscar-nominated star of “Precious.” Stern said: "Everyone's pretending she's a part of show business and she's never going to be in another movie.”

Well, obviously, Howard Stern didn't know what the heck he was talking about when he said that Oscar-nominated "Precious" star Gabourey Sidibe is "never going to be in another movie." Sidibe completed two projects before the Oscars and the African-American film community is going to make sure that she (and a lot of other talented artists) continue to get opportunities to display their talents...
